Great reading any time!
... in print, digital or audio

The book, No Ordinary Lives .... The Life and Times of Chapin Area World War II Veterans, written by Tom Fincher, is available for purchase at the Chapin Chamber.  The books are $30, and make great Christmas gifts.  Cash or checks are accepted. (copied from the Chapin Chamber of Commerce electronic newsletter.)

Still a number one read!  Everyone continues to talk about Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken (2010). Set in the WWII era, this is the true story of a man who stretches himself far beyond the average while enduring challenges you will not believe—an inspiration to all, a sample of unimaginable courage. FYI> Universal has bought the film rights.  Francis Lawrence (Water for Elephants) has been selected as the director.

How far will you go to help a friend? Another page turner. Follow Dr. Marina Singh as she travels to the Amazon jungle in Brazil in search of a friend. Step into a third world. How do you feel?  How hard will you work to find Singh’s co-worker?  Don’t miss Ann Patchett’s The State of Wonder.

Controversy arose in Amy Chua’s 2011 commentary on cultural differences in raising children. Read The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother.  It’s food for thought.  (excerpt from chap 9) “One thing that the piano and violin have in common – with each other but also with many sports – is that you can’t play extraordinarily well unless you’re relaxed.”

DON'T FORGET
. Reading throughout the year for all students posted on each Lexington 5 school's website (To reach your child's school, go to www.lex5.k12.sc.us to drop down box on top entitled Schools.) Note the information on the school page may be under the Media Center link. Info includes writing and reading suggestions for Honors/AP.  Elementary schools include excellent reading and research suggestions.

Return to the Classics

In 2010, the Chapin Woman's Club donated part of its auction proceeds to the Chapin Branch of the Lexington County Library.  In turn, the Chapin Branch purchased audio CD's of the classics.  The list, in part, includes great Classics such as:  Great Expectations, Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, 2001 Space Odyssey, Picture of Dorian Gray, Rich Dad Poor Dad, War & Peace, To Kill a Mockingbird, Alice in Wonderland and many more.  For a complete list, please visit our local Chapin Library and enjoy listening to one of these Classics!
